Call to Action November 10 – DOWNTOWN PLAN

Dear Willmore Neighbors and Friends,

The Downtown Plan and related Environmental Impact Report go before the Long Beach Planning Commission this Thursday, November 10, at 5:30pm.

For over four years, Downtown residents, city staff and the local business community have worked together to codify our vision for the future of Downtown Long Beach. The resultant Downtown Plan successfully incorporates our mutual interest in; respect for each neighborhood’s unique character, future private development of high quality and relevance to its surrounding neighborhood, reduced and more predictable bureaucratic regulations for new development and the economic impact of new development understood and planned for in a systematic, Downtown-wide manner.

We bring this Planning Commission meeting to your attention to acknowledge the hard work so many of you have done over the years and to ensure that we all understand there is keen, organized and vocal opposition to this plan. This opposition by interest groups, in an attempt to secure affordable housing and employment requirements for future Downtown development, has effectively delayed the implementation of the Downtown Plan. As the Downtown Plan only affects a portion of the city, this plan is not the appropriate vehicle to address these concerns.

The Willmore City Heritage Association Board urges you ensure the Planning Commission understands we, the residents of the Downtown, are profoundly interested in the future growth of our neighborhood. To this end, we request three actions:

  1. Please speak with your neighbors to increase awareness of the Downtown Plan.  Share these two documents:  Downtown Plan Flyer & Talking Points
  2. Attend the Planning Commission this Thursday, November 10 and wear WHITE. The meeting will be held at City Hall from 5:30pm. Free car and bike parking is available.
  3.  “Like” the Downtown Plan on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/supportdowntownlb) and submit a form letter of support on the Chamber’s website (http://www.chamberadvocacy.biz/downtownplan/).  Both sites provide good information on the Plan in case you have questions.

We need at least 30 residents to represent WCHA this Thursday with five willing to speak on our behalf. Please email neighbors@willmorecity.org if you are able to attend and/or speak.

Respectfully,

Amy, Kathleen, Patty, Jana, Jim, Michelle, and Emily

Willmore City Heritage Association Board
