Summer in Willmore

Many thanks to those who participated in the June meeting!  WCHA was recognized by Drake Park with a Certificate of Appreciation.  We love Drake Park!  Here’s a brief run down for those who missed this wonderful neighborhood gathering:

  • LB Police Department’s Officer Laurie Briney informed us that in efforts to combat auto theft in the South Division, LBPD will be distributing FREE steering wheel locks for certain Honda’s and Toyota’s.  To participate contact Officer Briney at 562.570.7073 or She also announced the next scheduled Community Leadership Forum on June 21, 2011.  See the EVENTS section below for more information.
  • Leslie Hunsaker, Planning and Development Bureau, City of Long Beach, Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine shared that the department is applying for grants through the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program (Proposition 84).  Keep your finger’s crossed because if granted $2.5 million will commence construction of the soccer fields at the Drake/Chavez Greenbelt!!!!   • Kris Larson, Vice President, Downtown Long Beach Business Associates  invited all Willmore residents to attend the summer festivities happening downtown!!! The events include: S.A.M., a new shop local program, and the Downtown Property Based Improvement District (PBID) renewal process.  See the EVENTS section below for more information.  Kris Larson can be reached at
  • Lena Gonzalez, Field Deputy, District 1 Council Office, updated that artists are being sought to paint the Willmore electrical boxes along Magnolia!!!  She is also compiling a list of street curbs that need improvement in the neighborhood. Twilight Walk and Bike

Enjoy Twilight Walk “and bike” in June! Stroll down Pine Avenue to see art, hear music, taste wine, shop jewelry, eat baklava, and more…! See what the buzz is all about!

2nd Saturday Shop & Walk – Downtown Long Beach

Welcome back to the 2nd Saturday Shop & Walk folks which is technically being held on the 3rd Saturday this month to coinicide with the new “Shop Local” Campaign so expect to get some goodies in the beginning of the tour! We will meet at Promenade Square Park at 11am and will be starting our open format!

Some highlights:

Long Beach Police Department Community Leadership Forum

This will be Commander Stilnovich’s last Community Leadership Forum.  He’s moving on the the LBPD Gang’s & Violent Crime section, come by and say farewell.  Also come meet the new South Division Commander John Benedetti.

GO Long Beach is designed to provide Long Beach, CA residents, businesses, and visitors the opportunity to access City Hall, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, from anywhere. You will be able to quickly submit service requests for issues such as graffiti, potholes and sign damage.  From the comforts of home residents can simply visit the site, select an issue, upload a picture, enter location, and submit.  You will also be emailed status reports.  So give GO Long Beach a try!
